Easy plum cake recipe – Top 5 Christmas dessert

Christmas is nearer and we are here with a very easy plum cake recipe. This recipe can be made by using rum but here we are making eggless and traditional tea cake with all ingredients. As every region gave its own touch to this recipe.

What is Plum cake? 

Plum cake is Christmas pudding. It originated in the Europe region. It is eaten at teatime across the world and is not so sweet but loaded with lots of flavors. As we are eating Soan papdi on Diwali western culture makes this recipe at Christmas. It is not similar to fruit cake. This is made of dried fruit and you can easily store this. Traditionally it is soaked in rum for many months before the festival so it tastes a little bitter and sour.

Let’s Start with Plum cake Recipe

  • Preparation Time :  20 minutes
  • Cooking Time:  60 minutes
  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Ingredients for Easy plum cake recipe:

Soak dry fruits: 

  • 50 grams – black raisins
  • 50 grams – brown raisins
  • 50 grams – green raisins
  • 25 grams – dried blueberries
  • 50 grams – tooty fruity
  • orange juice

Molasses (Blackjack):

  • 1/4th cup – Sugar
  • 1/4th cup – jaggery
  • 200ml – water

For making the cake:

  • 140 grams / 1 cup – Maida
  • 1/4th tsp  – Salt
  • ½ tsp – Cinnamon powder
  • 1/4th tsp – Clove powder
  • 1/4th tsp – Nutmeg powder
  • ½ tsp – Ginger powder
  • ½ tsp – Baking powder
  • 1/8th tsp – Baking soda
  • 100 grams – Butter
  • 75 ml – Orange juice
  • 1 tbsp – Brown sugar
  • 50 grams – Prepared molasses
  • 140 grams / 1/2 cup – Condensed milk
  • 1 tsp / 5 ml – Vanilla essence
  •  40 grams – Almonds
  • ½ – Lemon peel (grated)
  • 1/4 – Orange peel (grated)

 For garnishing: Dried cranberries, Tutti fruity, Walnuts, Almonds


Steps of Plum Cake Recipe :

Dry fruit mix:

  1. Soak all these dry fruits in orange juice. As we are preparing an alcohol-free version, going to use orange juice instead of alcohol. Once the orange juice is added, cling wrap & cover the bowl & kept it in the refrigerator for 24 hours. You can choose to soak these dry fruits for up to a week. 
  2. First microwave the cling-wrapped dry fruits for 3-4 minutes in 30-sec bursts. The dry fruits will plump up & you can prepare a cake with it.

  1. In a pan, Add 1/4th cup sugar After adding the sugar, let it cook on medium flame until when entire sugar has turned brown & caramelized, add jaggery and stir it. When the mixture turned out black turn off the flame and cool it down.
  2. Once the mixture has cooled down, add water. After adding water, put the flame back on & stir the mixture very well. Once your mixture gets to the consistency of sugar syrup.
  3. Transfer this to a bowl. As it is cooling down, a mixture will become very thick, that’s the consistency we need.

  1. First, to make the dry mixture add refined flour, salt, cinnamon powder, clove powder, nutmeg powder, ginger powder, baking powder, and baking soda After adding all the dry ingredients, sift them well.
  2. Now prepare wet ingredients, On a gas stove, put a pan & add 75 ml orange juice, 100 grams butter, 1 tbsp brown sugar, and 50 grams Black Jack. After adding all these ingredients, switch on the flame & cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes. 
  3. Now switch off the flame & cool down a little bit, now add the soaked fruits, condensed milk & vanilla essence, stir & mix well. Further, add this mixture to the dry ingredients & mix once, now add almonds, orange zest & lemon zest. And your batter is ready for bake.

Baking Instruction:

  1. Pour the batter into the tin and tap it on the table to remove any air bubbles in the batter, top it with some dried cranberries, tutti fruity, walnuts & almonds, and bake it in a preheated oven at 150℃ for 1 hour.
  2. Check the process of baking keeping the oven doors closed. Check the cake after an hour for its doneness by inserting a toothpick, if it comes out clean your cake is baked to its perfection, if the toothpick is not clean you need to bake it a little more.

FAQs About Plum cake:

  • Is plum cake recipe healthy? 

It has lots of dry fruits so yes it is healthy and it contains low sugar.  It controls blood pressure, and sugar level and is good for lowering cholesterol levels. but you can’t consume it on daily bases.

  • Why rum is used in it? 

Traditionally when dry fruits are soaked in rum or alcohol it plumps up fruits and tastes more flavourful after baking.

  • What are the disadvantages of eating this? 

There is no disadvantage to eating this but it causes diarrhea or gas if you consume more.
